Ed is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison (BA 1961) and of the University of Illinois, College of Law at Champaign-Urbana (LLB 1963). He served as an Adjunct Professor of Law (Taxation/Employee Benefits/ERISA) at the University of Illinois, College of Law (1996-2007), argued a Federal gift and estate tax case before the United States Supreme Court and presented income, gift, estate, ERISA, and business law cases before the Federal 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, various Federal District Courts, the United States Tax Court, the State of Illinois Supreme Court, the Illinois 3rd District Court of Appeals and various Illinois Circuit Courts.

He testified before the Oversight Committee of the House Ways and Means Committee, United States House of Representatives as to the "Tax Problems of the Small Businessman," served as an Editor of the Illinois State Bar Association’s Federal Tax Section Newsletter, Contributing Editor of Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and as a member of the American Bar Association’s Substantive Law Advisory Board, Tax Law and The Complete Lawyer. Ed served as the Committee Chair of the Illinois State Bar Association’s Section on Taxation and a member of its Business & Advice & Financial Planning Section Council.

Ed has authored more than 40 articles in his area of emphasis and lectured before more than 60 groups located in Illinois, Arkansas, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He served as a Board member of RLI Corp. (NYSE; RLI) (1975-2009), its outside general counsel (1975-2002) and a member of its Executive Resources and Investment and Finance Committees. Ed was a member of Lloyds of London and is a member of the Advisory Committee of the private equity firm, Pfingsten Partners LLC, headquartered in Chicago, with offices in ChangAn, China, New Delhi, India and Chennai, India.
